At approximately 00:20 hours on the morning of Saturday, June 12th, 2021, the Hempstead Fire Department was called to smoke in the hallway of 150 Washington Street – a 7 story occupied multiple dwelling located off Jackson Street. When firefighters made their way into the building to investigate further, they found fire in the walls of Apartment 4O. Moments later a working fire was transmitted, and mutual aid requested. West Hempstead Ladder 765 and an engine from South Hempstead responded to the scene to assist. The scene was placed under control within thirty-five minutes from the time of the original alarm. Nearly two hours after the first call firefighters were called back to 150 Washington Street for a report of an apartment fire in Apartment 4O. Firefighters again made their way into the building and upon opening up found fire in the walls. A working fire was again transmitted. This time command held off on mutual aid and firefighters hooked up to and used the standpipe system to ensure all fire was extinguished. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
