Washington Avenue [5-6-21]

On the morning of Thursday, May 6th, 2021 the Garden City Fire Department was called to a report of a house fire with people trapped on Washington Avenue off 11th Street. The first fire units to arrive on scene were met with heavy fire showing from a two-story private dwelling leading to the transmission of a signal ten [working fire]. Among the first units to arrive on scene was Rockville Centre Engine 441 who was relocated to Garden City following a standby detail at a multiple alarm fire in Westbury. Upon making entry into the home firefighters encountered heavy clutter conditions – a condition that contributed to the transmission of a second alarm. Firefighters went on to put multiple hand lines into operation to contain the fire which was on the first and second floors as well as in the attic of the home. Unfortunately, it was later discovered that three occupants inside the home did not survive the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
