At 21:50 hours on the night of Thursday, April 16th, 2020 the North Bellmore Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a car fire on the eastbound Southern State Parkway. When the first fire department units arrived on scene, they were met with a confirmed car fire eastbound just east of the ramp to exit 24N [Merrick Avenue]. They also found that a person was still inside the vehicle. North Bellmore Chief of Department Dave Marschall notified Six-Five-Zero Dispatch of the update and the alarm was upgraded to a general response. North Bellmore Engine 655 was the first engine to arrive on scene. While the engine crew was putting a hand line [car pack] into operation Chief Marschall along with Firefighter Nick White Jr. were able to locate and remove the victim through the back, tailgate window of the van. While they were doing this North Bellmore Assistant Chief DiRenzo helped keep the fire back with an extinguisher. The driver [the only person in the van] was tended to, given oxygen, and was breathing on his own. He was then transported to NUMC by North Bellmore Fire Department Ambulance 652 and is expected to survive having sustained third degree burns to approximately 40% of his body. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
