South Corona Avenue [12-4-19]

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 4th, 2019 the Valley Stream Fire Department was called to a house fire on South Corona Avenue off West Jamaica Avenue. When firefighters arrived on scene, they were met with smoke showing from a two story, two family private dwelling. A signal ten [working fire] was transmitted and mutual aid notified. Firefighters encountered fire in the basement of the home with extension to the floors above. During the operation a second alarm was transmitted bringing additional units to the scene and new companies to standby. At least three hand lines were stretched and put into operation to fight the blaze which resulted in two firefighter injuries – both non-life threatening. Nassau County Hazmat was called to the scene for several hazards in the home including propane tanks. Valley Stream Engine 343 and Ladder 345 were the first engine and truck companies to arrive on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation and all fire department units were under the command of Valley Stream Chief of Department Jason Croak [3400].
