At 00:35 hours on the morning of Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 the Westbury Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 135 Post Avenue – a seven-story occupied multiple dwelling with over one hundred twenty units and three wings. Westbury dispatch provided responding units an additional of smoke from the door of a third-floor apartment. The first lieutenant of Westbury Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 was among the first to make it to the fire floor where he was met with a heavy smoke condition. Upon making his way into the cluttered fire apartment he was met with a confirmed fire and victim within. These conditions were radioed to Westbury Chief of Department John Bartunek  who transmitted the working fire. EMS was requested forthwith for the civilian victim who was moved to a central staircase by the lieutenant and Nassau County police officers. Westbury First Assistant Chief Kenny Gass  was among those who knocked down a bulk of the fire with water cans and kept it in check until the hand line was put into place. In all a total of six people were transported to area hospitals – four police officers, the Westbury lieutenant, and the civilian victim who is expected to survive. Among the departments mutual aided were Hicksville, Carle Place, and East Meadow. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and all fire department units were under the command of Westbury Chief of Department John Bartunek .
