The Hempstead Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 390 Jerusalem Avenue late on the night of Saturday, September 16th, 2017. When firefighters arrived on scene they were met with heavy smoke showing from a church located at 11 Florence Avenue – next to the originally dispatched address. Upon making their way into the building firefighters were met with a significant fire load leading to the transmission of a working fire. Multiple hand lines were put into operation on different sides of the building to attack the fire. Due to the amount of overhaul that needed to be done and the high ceilings in the church multiple FAST teams were reassigned as additional truck companies including West Hempstead, Roosevelt, Rockville Centre and some members of Baldwin. Approximately two hours into the operation the scene was placed under control. Among the other departments mutual aided were Uniondale and Lakeview. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and all fire department units were under the command of Hempstead Chief of Department Sandas .
