On the afternoon of Saturday, October 18th, 2014 the Great Neck Alert Fire Company held a wet down ceremony for Engine 824 – a 2014 Pierce Velocity Pumper. The specifications of the rig include a 500 horsepower Detroit DD13 engine, an Allison 4000 automatic transmission, a passenger side pump panel [the first piece of apparatus to do this], a 1500 gallon per minute pump, and a 500 gallon water tank along with roll up doors and a 10 kilowatt generator. The department’s reasoning for the passenger side based pump panel was that seventy of the alarms they have been called to end up being on the passenger side of the rig upon arrival as well as looking to protect the motor pump operator. At the wet down ceremony were units from Williston Park, Great Neck Vigilant, Manhasset Lakeville, and Albertson. The new Engine 824 replaces an older American LaFrance model that the department had been using. Engine 824 is based out of the Alerts Headquarters located at 555 Middle Neck Road. The best of luck to the Great Neck Alert Fire Company with their new piece of apparatus.
